What a 2D Explainer Video Actually Is
The form is defined by what it leaves out. A 2D explainer strips a subject back to flat shapes, type, and a small number of moving elements, then paces them against a voiceover so that one idea lands at a time. There is no camera, no lighting rig, and no depth beyond what scale and parallax suggest. That constraint is the point. It is why a policy structure or an onboarding flow reads more clearly as animation than it does as footage.
People often use “2D animation” and “motion graphics” interchangeably. In practice they describe different centres of gravity. Motion graphics moves design elements, so shapes, icons, charts, and typography. Character animation moves figures with weight and performance. Most explainers we make sit somewhere between the two, and the balance is a decision taken early because it changes the illustration workload substantially. What a 2D explainer is not is a cheaper substitute for 3D. The two solve different problems. 3D earns its place when the subject has real geometry that a viewer needs to understand spatially, such as a device, a molecule, or a plant. 2D earns its place when the subject is a process, a relationship, or an abstraction that has no physical form to show. When a 2D Explainer Is the Right Format
Where 2D does the work no other format can
Reach for 2D when the thing you are explaining cannot be filmed. Software that has not shipped. A claims process that exists only as a flowchart. The relationship between a premium and a payout. A sequence of steps someone needs to remember under stress. In each of these the subject is invisible, and animation is the only medium that can give it a shape at all.
2D also suits work that has to be revised, localised, or extended later. Because the artwork is built in layers rather than captured, a sequence can be re-versioned for a new market, a new product tier, or a new regulatory footnote without returning to a set. For campaigns that run across several territories, that flexibility usually matters more than any single frame.
The Hilton sequence above is a clear example. Scheduling software has no photogenic surface. Room availability, staff rostering, and check-in coordination are states in a system, not objects in a room. When we will tell you to use something else
If the subject is a physical product whose form is the selling point, 3D will serve you better. If the message depends on a real person’s credibility, so a founder, a clinician, or a customer, live action will carry it further than an illustrated stand-in. And if the deliverable is a thirty-second social cutdown with one idea in it, a full explainer is more machinery than the job needs. We would rather say so at the brief stage than at delivery.
The Styles We Work In
Style is not decoration. It sets the register of the whole film, and it determines how much of the budget goes into illustration versus animation. These are the five we return to most often, and a broader survey sits in our guide to motion graphics styles.
Flat vector illustration
Clean shapes, a tight colour palette, no rendering. It is the default for software, fintech, and professional services because it reads instantly at small sizes and holds up on a phone screen. It is also the most economical to revise, which matters on any project with a review cycle.
Character-led animation
A figure the viewer follows through a situation. It buys emotional attachment and it makes a scenario concrete, which is why it suits anything built around a customer journey. The cost sits in rigging, so it pays off when the character recurs across a campaign rather than appearing once.
Kinetic typography
Type as the primary image. It works when the script itself is the strongest asset, in manifestos, campaign lines, and anything designed to survive a muted autoplay feed. It is unforgiving of loose writing, because there is nowhere for a weak sentence to hide. Our piece on kinetic typography covers the craft in detail.
Infographic and data-led
Charts, comparisons, and figures given a sequence and a pace. The discipline here is restraint. A chart that animates every element at once communicates nothing, so the work is deciding what moves, in what order, and what stays still. This overlaps with our business infographics practice.
Hand-drawn and textured
Visible mark-making, paper grain, watercolour bleed. It signals warmth and craft, and it suits heritage, culture, and public-service subjects where a flat vector treatment would feel cold. It is the least forgiving of late structural changes, because the artwork cannot simply be nudged.
How a 2D Explainer Gets Made
Six stages. Each one closes before the next opens. Revisions are cheap early and expensive late, so the process front-loads the decisions that are hardest to reverse.
1. Script
Written to length, not trimmed to it later. Roughly 150 words per minute of finished film. We lock the script before a single frame is drawn, because a structural change at storyboard costs days and the same change at animation costs weeks.
2. Storyboard and animatic
Every scene drawn rough and cut to a scratch voiceover. This is the cheapest point at which to find out that a sequence does not work. Review the animatic for structure, order, and pacing. Do not review it for colour or line quality, neither of which is decided yet.
3. Design frames
Three to five key frames rendered at final quality, setting palette, typography, and illustration treatment. Sign-off here defines the visual language for the whole film. Changes after this point propagate through every scene.
4. Animation
Assets built in layers, then animated against the locked timing. Rough-cut previews go out at intervals so nothing is a surprise at the end. Scope is fixed at this stage. New scenes are a new brief, not a revision.
5. Sound
Final voiceover, music bed, and sound design. Sound carries more of an explainer’s clarity than most people expect. A well-placed transition effect does the work of a whole visual cue, and a muddy mix will undo good animation.
6. Delivery
Masters supplied at the ratios and specifications each channel needs, with captions and any localised versions. We hand over the project files and a clean asset library, so the work can be extended later without rebuilding it. How Revisions and Approvals Work
Two review rounds sit inside each stage. That is deliberate. Feedback gathered against a rough animatic reshapes a film in hours. The same feedback gathered against finished animation reshapes it in weeks, and sometimes it cannot be accommodated at all without starting a scene again.
What each review is for
Script review decides what the film says and in what order. Animatic review decides structure, timing, and whether a sequence holds together. Design frame review decides palette, typography, and illustration treatment. Animation review is for errors and polish only, not for reopening any of the above.
The most common way a project slips is a stakeholder seeing the work for the first time at animation stage and raising a structural point that belonged at animatic. It is a reasonable note arriving at an unreasonable moment. The fix is procedural rather than creative: identify every person with the standing to reject the work, and get them into the animatic review specifically.
Consolidating feedback
One consolidated set of notes per round, from one person, with internal disagreements already resolved. Contradictory notes from several reviewers put a studio in the position of arbitrating your organisation’s internal debate, which is not a position that produces good work. Where two stakeholders want different things, we will build the version that serves the brief and say why.
Timestamped notes against a shared preview are more useful than a document. “The transition at 0:34 reads as a new section and should not” is actionable. “Feels a bit flat in the middle” needs another round of conversation before anyone can act on it.
Revision or new scope
A revision refines something already agreed: pacing, a colour, a line of type, an easing curve. New scope adds something that was not in the signed-off animatic, such as an extra scene, a second language version, an additional aspect ratio, or a change of message. We flag the distinction as soon as it appears rather than absorbing it quietly and running short elsewhere. No scope creep, and no surprises at delivery.
What We Need From You to Start
The strongest projects start from a brief that answers five things. Who is watching, and what do they already know. What is the single idea they should leave with. Where will the film play, and how long do we have. What has to appear for legal or brand reasons. And what does approval look like, meaning who signs off and at which stages.
When those are missing, a studio fills the gaps by guessing, and the guesses surface as revisions later. The most common gap is the third one. A film built for a conference screen and a film built for a muted social feed are different films, and finding that out at delivery is the expensive way to learn it.
You do not need a script, a style reference, or a storyboard to approach us. Those are ours to make. What we cannot invent for you is the constraint set, so bring the deadline, the channel, the approvals, and anything that legally must or must not be said. Everything after that is our problem.
Explainers in Regulated and Technical Sectors
Most of our explainer work sits in sectors where accuracy is not a preference. That changes the process more than it changes the craft. Review cycles run longer, source material comes from technical teams rather than marketing, and every claim on screen needs something behind it.
Finance and insurance
Policy structures, fund mechanics, premium and payout relationships, claims journeys. The task is making a conditional structure legible without flattening it into something misleading. Animation is well suited to this because it can reveal one condition at a time rather than presenting the whole matrix at once. Instructions people need to recall under pressure. Bold typography, high-contrast colour, and a deliberately slow reveal, because the goal is retention rather than engagement. A 2D explainer can walk through what to do during a fire, when encountering wildlife on a trail, or while administering first aid, in a form that stays legible when someone is frightened.
Industrial and technical
Process plants, facility operations, equipment workflows. Here 2D often handles the system-level view while 3D carries the components, and the two are cut together. Our medical and industrial animation work sets out how that split tends to fall.
Where the Finished Work Goes
The channel should be decided at brief stage, because it shapes the film rather than the export. A sixteen-by-nine master cropped to vertical after the fact will have its composition ruined, and a film designed for narration will fall apart in a feed that plays silent by default.
For social, that means designing for a muted vertical frame from the first storyboard, with captions treated as a design element rather than an accessibility afterthought. For event and conference screens it means non-standard ratios, viewing distance, and ambient light, where a sequence has to read in about three seconds from across a hall. For sales enablement it means a master that can be cut down into shorter segments a team can send individually.
One well-planned production usually yields a master, several cutdowns, a set of loops, and a library of stills. Planning for that at the outset costs nothing. Retrofitting it afterwards means rebuilding scenes.
Localisation and the Second Life of the Work
Because 2D artwork is built in layers rather than captured, a finished film is not a closed object. Text, voiceover, figures, and individual scenes can be replaced without disturbing the rest. For any brand operating across several markets, that is usually the strongest argument for the format, and it is worth planning for at storyboard stage rather than discovering later.
Language versions
Swapping a voiceover is straightforward. Swapping on-screen type is not, and it is where most localisation runs into trouble. Translated copy rarely occupies the same space as the original, so a layout that fits English will break when the same line arrives thirty per cent longer, or in a script with different vertical metrics.
We design type containers with that expansion allowed for from the start when we know other languages are coming. It costs nothing at design frame stage. Retrofitting it means reflowing every typographic scene in the film. If a Mandarin, Malay, or Tamil version is even a possibility, that is worth saying in the brief rather than after the English master is signed off.
Regulatory and market variance
The same film often cannot run unchanged across territories. A disclaimer required in one market may be worded differently in another, a product name may vary, and a claim permitted in one jurisdiction may need qualifying elsewhere. Built properly, these become swappable elements rather than separate productions.
The practical approach is to isolate everything variable onto its own layers and keep the underlying animation common. One master, several compliant versions, and a single place to make a change when a regulation moves.
Refreshing without rebuilding
Explainers age unevenly. The structure and illustration usually hold for years while a figure, a product tier, or an interface screenshot goes out of date within months. When a film is organised well, updating those means replacing a layer, not commissioning a new production.
This is why we hand over project files and a clean asset library at delivery rather than a flat master alone. The illustration set, character rigs, and typographic system have value beyond the film they were made for, and they routinely go on to serve presentations, social cutdowns, and event screens. Work commissioned once should not have to be commissioned again to reach a second channel.
Brand Manifestos and Company Films
A manifesto film has no product to demonstrate and no process to walk through, which makes it the hardest brief in this category. What it has is a position, and the work is giving that position a visual argument rather than a montage. Typography, pacing, and restraint do most of the lifting.
These films tend to have the longest internal review of anything we make, because everyone in the organisation recognises themselves in the subject. Locking the script early matters more here than anywhere else.
